Eggs Benedict was first served at Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City in the late 19th century. The dish is believed to have been created by Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street stockbroker, who ordered "buttered toast, poached eggs, and a hooker of bacon" at the restaurant's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel location. The chef, Oscar Tschirky, added hollandaise sauce and named the dish after Benedict.
